Why should I want to learn how to be an independent filmmaker?
Important question. One, it's scaleable and translates upward. In my experience, it's a lot harder for people in the studio system to make an independent film where its not the case the other way around. Two, you're more in control of your life. Whether that's your schedule or your actual art that you're creating. Three, if your project hits you're more likely to reap a bigger financial reward because there are less mouths to feed and less "Hollywood accounting" to diminish your returns.
